A Very Fine and Large Swedish 19th Century Watercolor Portrait on Linen by Thure de Thulstrup (Swedish, 1848-1930) Titled "A Mother and Daughter Stroll at The Park" Circa: 1882. Formerly property from the Private Collection of The 22nd California Governor J.N. Gillett.
Signed and Dated l/rt: Thulstrup, 82. A brass plaque on frame reads: "From the Collection of Gov. J.N. Gillett, 22nd Governor of Calif."
Thure de Thulstrup was born in Sweden on June 9, 1848, son of Magnus & Hedwig (Neé Akrell). His father was Minister of War of Sweden in 1916. He graduated form the National Military Academy in Stockholm and was an officer in the French Army serving in Algeria. He studied drawing in Paris and traveled to Canada as a topographical engineer. Later, while in Boston, he married Lucie Bavillot of New York on June 31, 1879. His first illustration was featured in The New York Graphic and then on Leslie's Weekly, subsequently and for many years thereafter, his works were featured in Harper's Weekly. Thulstrup self taught himself how to paint and became a member of the Society of Illustrators, The American Watercolor Society, The John Ericsson Society and became a Knight Order of Vasa, Sweden.
